The Premier League is a spectacle of worldwide interest and attention which has over the years attracted substantial investment from broadcasters, billionaires, and brands alike progressively strengthening the purchase power and financial reward of clubs playing in English footballs topflight.

As a host of teams have battled it out through the decades vast sums of money have been spent in the bid for titles, European football, and safety from relegation. However, the ability to spend big is by no means a guarantee of footballing success, and some clubs it seems are better than others when it comes to making investments in the transfer market.

In BetVictor’s Premier League Transfers we analyse how spending has surged since the division's inception – diving into the transfer records of every club across each Premier League season to provide insight on what it costs a club to achieve their seasonal objectives, and which sides are the most efficient or wasteful when it comes to transfer expenditure vs league performance.

The History of Premier League Spending

Since the Premier League’s inaugural season, a combined £21.3 billion has been spent on player transfers with £10.7 billion of income generated from player sales and the overall net spend for the league totalling a whopping -£10.6 billion.

Chelsea is frequently the top spending side in the Premier League, having spent the highest amount in 9 different seasons, whilst Manchester United have spent the highest amount on a single player the most amount of times, paying the highest fee for a single player in 8 different seasons.

The Top Spenders

Over the past 5 seasons Chelsea are the top spending side in the Premier League, outspending the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United. The Blues outlay of £791.6m accounts for 9.88% of all Premier League spending over this period. Meanwhile, Manchester United have the highest net spend with -£479.0m.

Manchester City’s £1.4 billion spend over the past decade is the highest of any club, but it is once again Manchester United that racked up the highest net spend in this time with -£914.5m. Manchester City are also ruthlessly efficient when it comes to spend vs performance, paying less per win, goal and point than several of their rivals.

The Cost of Staying Up

Staying up can be one of the most difficult tasks for a club given the immense quality and competition in the Premier League. Whether you are a newly promoted team trying to secure safety or an existing side trying to avoid relegation, how much a team spends in the transfer market and the personnel they can bring in will determine their fate.

Over the past 5 seasons newly promoted sides who managed to cement their position as a Premier League club avoiding relegation spent on average £27.1m more than newly promoted teams whose spell in the topflight was short-lived. Brentford’s £34.4m outlay last season marks a significant anomaly in spend vs performance showing just how effective their ‘Moneyball’ approach to recruitment has been. Sides finishing in 13th in the four seasons prior spent almost double that of Brentford with £61.7m on average.
