This week’s #BVGoldenGoal match featured Everton and Manchester United in a New Year’s Day edition of our weekly competition. In our last contest, eleven players shared the £25,000 prize after Liverpool FC dismantled Swansea 5-0.

What were people predicting this week?

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney was the most popular pick this week to get the opener against his former side at Goodison Park. United were favourites for this one, so there was no surprise that a correct score of 2-1 to the away side was the most selected correct score. Once again, players chose the 17th minute more than any other – something that has happened on almost every week of the competition this season. Players would be hoping for 13 to be there lucky number as that and Rooney first scorer was the most popular combined pick.

The Match

United probably just shaded the first half as chances were few and far between for both sides. Stand in captain Paul Pogba looked like he was in the mood to make things happen as he was at the heart of most of the visitors best moves. Despite United ending the half strongly, both sides went in at the break goal less.

The side from Manchester cranked it up a notch in the second half and after Mata hit the woodwork, Anthony Martial scored the Golden Goal in the 57th minute. This meant we had 9 players left with a chance to share the £25,000 jackpot. At this stage in the match it looked like the away side could score 3 or 4 as Everton were pinned back for long periods and after missing a glorious chance via a counter attack themselves, Lingard sealed the points with a well taken effort in the 81st minute. That killed off the game as a contest and set up two players with a nervous 9 minutes plus stoppages to get through. However, there were no hard luck stories as the game ended 0-2 and landed both players £12,500 each.

The Result

£12,500 each – not bad for an afternoon’s work!
