BetVictor Ambassador Michael Owen is here to give his predictions ahead of Gameweek 35 in the Premier League.
Manchester United v Chelsea
Chelsea to win 1-0
That defeat to Arsenal has all but ended United’s season. I actually thought United played quite well in the game and looked a threat going forward. They conceded some soft goals though, and now I worry how serious the squad will view this game.
Chelsea had so much of the ball and so many shots against West Ham, but it was a struggle to get the opening goal. They did get a late winner, but Tuchel will want his side to be more ruthless.
I have to favour Chelsea here. I’m going for a 1-0 win.
Newcastle United v Liverpool
Liverpool to win 2-1
Make no mistake, this is far from a straightforward game for Liverpool. Newcastle have won four in a row in all competitions, conceding just one in that time. They cruised to the win at Norwich last week, this side is full of confidence.
Liverpool probably could have had more goals against Villareal, but it was a comfortable 2-0 win nonetheless. The last two wins have been against sides who have defended deep and tried to frustrate them, Everton and Villareal, it’s a good sign that they still found a way to win.
Liverpool have so much momentum right now. This won’t be easy, Newcastle are in great form themselves. I’m going for 2-1 Liverpool.
Aston Villa v Norwich City
Aston Villa to win 2-0
Villa haven’t won in over a month, but that point against Leicester was a valuable one. At this stage of the season, all that matters is getting enough points to secure safety. A win here would guarantee safety, and I can see them getting it.
Norwich are now ten points off safety, and clearly are needing a miracle to stay up. They just don’t score enough goals, that’s been the biggest issue all season.
For that reason, I can only see a comfortable win for Villa here. 2-0.
Southampton v Crystal Palace
1-1 draw
Southampton did brilliantly to come from two down against Brighton, thanks in large part to James Ward-Prowse. He’s becoming a talisman for this side. He offers far more than just his set-piece ability these days, and I think a few clubs will be eyeing him.
As for Palace, they had a goalless draw against Leeds, but they should have won. They keep the ball, create plenty of chances, but they just don’t score enough goals. It’s still been a great season for the club.
This looks a very even game, there’s just two points between them in the league. I’m leaning towards a draw, 1-1.
Watford v Burnley
Burnley to win 2-1
Watford’s season was never going to be judged on games away against City, but to concede five can’t be good for the squad’s morale. Realistically, Watford need to win almost every game now.
I’m shocked at Burnley’s recent form. The players and interim coaching staff deserve loads of credit for the way they’ve applied themselves. Back-to-back home wins with clean sheets is bound to give the squad a huge lift and remarkably, they’ve got a real chance of staying up now.
A win for Burnley would be massive and would put them a few points away from probable safety. I’ve got to pick them on recent form, 2-1!
Wolves v Brighton
Wolves to win 1-0
Wolves recent form hasn’t been good, and they didn’t play well against Burnley last week. They’ve had a very good season; they need to finish it well. With sides above them continually dropping points, this side can still finish in the top six.
Graeme Potter must have been furious to see his side lose a two-goal lead against Southampton. Brighton don’t concede many, let alone lose leads like that.
Brighton have been dangerous on the road all season, this won’t be easy for Wolves. I’m still tipping Wolves though, 1-0.
Leeds United v Manchester City
Manchester City to win 3-0
Leeds did what they needed to do and got a point against Palace on Monday. It wasn’t a classic, but Jesse Marsch and Leeds won’t care one bit. They’ve got some difficult fixtures coming up, they need to pick up points in those sorts of games.
It doesn’t come much more difficult than City. They looked in great form against Watford, where Gabriel Jesus stole the show. He’s always been a natural goalscorer, and he took his four goals very nicely. Some of City’s play against Real on Tuesday was brilliant, they could have scored six or seven!
I don’t think we’ll see quite as many goals here, but City should score a few. 3-0
Everton v Chelsea
1-1 draw
There’s been a lot of discussion about how Everton approached the game at Anfield, but they showed a lot of character in the game, and they clearly managed to frustrate Liverpool for a large period of the game. Frank Lampard will be hoping for a similar performance from his players here.
Chelsea got a late winner over West Ham but they didn’t create or take enough chances. As good as this side can be, I still think there are games when the lack of a natural goalscorer can hurt them.
This won’t be high scoring. Everton will keep things tight and hope to use the crowd to their advantage. I can see them getting a point.
Tottenham Hotspur v Leicester City
Tottenham Hotspur to win 3-1
I can’t believe Spurs’ last two results. They looked full of confidence and goals, I don’t know what’s happened. The only positive, is that they haven’t lost too much ground to Arsenal in the race for fourth.
Leicester got a point against Villa last week, but it wasn’t a classic. They’ve not been finding the net as much recently. They’ve drawn two in a row, and they probably should have won both.
A third game in a row without a win would be unthinkable for Spurs. I’m predicting a 3-1 win.
West Ham United v Arsenal
1-1 draw
West Ham competed very well at Stamford Bridge last week. They didn’t have a lot of the ball or many chances, but to concede a late winner must have been frustrating. Still, the Europa League is the priority for David Moyes.
What a massive couple of wins that was for Arsenal. I thought the Man United game could have gone either way, and really swung on Bruno Fernandes’ missed penalty. Nonetheless, some of Arsenal’s play was excellent and I really enjoyed some of Odegaard’s passes. We all know his quality, he oozes class when he’s at his best.
This is a tough one, I’m leaning towards a 1-1 draw.
Manchester United v Brentford
Manchester United to win 1-0
Now United have little to play for, I’m curious whether Ralk Rangnick will change the personnel. There’s a lot of promising youngsters at the club, now would be an ideal opportunity for them to get some game time ahead of the new boss coming in this summer.
Brentford have had such a great season and can travel to Old Trafford full of confidence after that draw against Spurs. They’ve been very organised in recent weeks, and make it difficult for each side they face.
I’m still going to pick United. Brentford will be difficult to break down, I’m going for 1-0.
