A Genie In Abottle Could Work his Magic in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse

A race named in honour of the 1963 Champion Hurdle winner, who was trained by George Spencer, father of top flat rider Jamie. It’s a crying shame that there aren’t eight runners here, as I remain convinced that Randall’s Ur Poet is a fair way ahead of his official mark and he really ought to have won over C&D last time out, getting to the front after a battle but then idling and allowing himself to be collared on the line. It’s clearly no surprise that he remains a maiden based on that showing, but he’s now fitted with a visor and that should help him concentrate, and his times in defeat are a match for anything in this race, for all others have been competing in more exalted company. I’ll try to cover my win bet by having a couple of forecasts with him to be second to the likes of Mitchouka and Mastermind, but the suggested bet is a straight win in this seven-runner affair.

In a race commemorating Irish and Aintree Grand National winner Bobbyjo (damn his eyes, I say, having had a month’s wages on Blue Charm in the latter at 100/1), the likeliest winner is Mala Beach if he can be forgiven a poor run last time, and plenty will be happy to do so for the Troytown winner. I’d not judge him too harshly on his latest flop which came in the Irish Gold Cup, but I favour A Genie In Abottle at likely odds. Noel Meade’s charge is at his best in small fields, so it may pay to ignore a couple of absolute clunkers in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury and the Thyestes on his latest start. Prior to that he had been shaping up into a high-class stayer when allowed to dominate, and the return to that role should see him back in the groove at a tasty price.

Sizing Coal is lightly raced in recent seasons, but seems to retain the majority of his old ability, as placed efforts in the Risk of Thunder Chase and a Down Royal hunter chase would testify, and he should be a little too sharp for former Foxhunter winner Salsify. The latter is qualified for Cheltenham already according to new race conditions, so merely needs to show the fire still burns with him if he’s to be given another outing there. As such, he won’t be knocked about here, and may not even represent the main danger to Sizing Coal.
