Big-race Verdict

1715 Aintree - The Grand National

Cloth Cap

The favourite but rightly so, looks the one to beat

Cloth Cap

The favourite but rightly so, looks the one to beat

Cloth Cap is as short as 9/2 for the Grand National and understandably so.

He’s very much the pick of the weights following his victory in last month’s Premier Chase at Kelso, where he made all the running and jumped well on the way to beating the very smart Aso by seven and a half lengths, conceding weight to the runner-up and ultimately well on top at the finish.

That was Cloth Cap’s first appearance since winning the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury in November, where he dominated the race throughout under an attacking ride from Tom Scudamore and ran out an impressive 10-length winner from Aye Right.

That was his first start in cheekpieces which he also wore at Kelso. Cloth Cap will have ground conditions to suit at Aintree, and he is proven over at least four miles having finished third in the Scottish Grand National as a novice two years ago, so he has plenty in his favour.

My Drogo

Unbeaten and look set to remain that way

My Drogo

Unbeaten and look set to remain that way

My Drogo is Timeform’s highest-rated novice hurdler in Britain this season after making it three from three in the Premier Novices’ Hurdle at Kelso last time, conceding weight all round and doing so in emphatic fashion.

Held up in the early stages, My Drogo made smooth headway on the final circuit and was produced to lead between the final two flights, quickly drawing clear from there to win by nine and a half lengths in an excellent time.

His strength at the finish suggests he’ll be suited by the step up to two and a half miles in this Grade 1, which looks the obvious next step following a pair of wins at Grade 2 level.

Admittedly, My Drogo’s long-term future is likely to lie over fences given his physique (rangy gelding), but he remains open to further progress as a hurdler in the meantime and is unlikely to give up his unbeaten record without a fight.

Handicap Hotshot

1615 Aintree - Saturday

Shown enough to suggest a win is near

Shown enough to suggest a win is near

Happygolucky is the only horse in this valuable handicap with a small ‘p’ attached to his Timeform rating, indicating that he remains with potential as a chaser.

Happygolucky has finished no worse than second in four starts over fences, putting up his best effort yet when filling the runner-up spot on his handicap debut in the Ultima at Cheltenham last time.

He was never far away at the Festival and was still only a length or so down when he threw in his only shaky leap at the last, just keeping on at the one pace from there to pass the post five and a half lengths behind the winner Vintage Clouds.

There was no disgrace in that, though, given that the winner had dropped to a very lenient mark judged on the pick of his form, and Happygolucky certainly showed enough to suggest he is up to winning some good staying handicaps.

He is fancied to defy a 2 lb higher mark to get his head back in front.
