Big-race verdict

1505 Cheltenham - Thursday

Paisley Park

2019 winner to bounce back in style

9/4

Paisley Park

2019 winner to bounce back in style

Paisley Park was an impressive winner of the 2019 Stayers’ Hurdle but his title defence ended in disappointment last season when he finished only seventh and was later found to be suffering from a fibrillating heart.

That has had no long-term impact, however, as Paisley Park has looked as good as ever in two starts this season.

He was unable to successfully concede 3 lb to Thyme Hill on his reappearance in the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury in November but that was an encouraging performance and he backed up that promise when reversing the form off level weights in the Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot.

Paisley Park looked in trouble for much of the straight but he found plenty for pressure and ran on strongly to get up close home and land the Long Walk for a second time.

Those pieces of form are the strongest on offer and he can regain his title, joining the likes of Baracouda, Inglis Drever and Big Buck’s as a multiple winner of the race.

The Banker

1320 Cheltenham - Thursday

Envoi Allen

Top class prospect to take all the beating

4/9

Envoi Allen

Top class prospect to take all the beating

Envoi Allen has looked something special from the outset and his unbeaten record includes two wins at the Cheltenham Festival. Envoi Allen landed the Champion Bumper in 2019, the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle last year and he can complete the Festival hat-trick in the Marsh Novices’ Chase this time around

Envoi Allen has taken well to chasing, looking like a natural and winning each of his three starts with plenty in hand, including the Grade 1 Drinmore Novice Chase at Fairyhouse in November.

His comfortable three-and-a-half-length victory in a Grade 3 at Punchestown last time taught us nothing new about him, but he remains a top-class chasing prospect who will take all the beating in the opening race on Thursday.

He is making his first start for Henry de Bromhead having been trained by Gordon Elliott.

Handicap Hotshot

1355 Cheltenham - Thursday

Imperial Alcazar

Looks well treated for the Pertemps Final

6/1

Imperial Alcazar

Looks well treated for the Pertemps Final

Imperial Alcazar made a promising start over hurdles last season, winning a maiden at Aintree and a novice at Leicester, while he also ran well when runner-up at Newcastle and Cheltenham on his other two outings.

The step up to three miles on his reappearance at Haydock looked sure to suit but he probably needed the run as he faded into mid-division having shown up well for a long way.

He duly proved a different proposition in a Pertemps qualifier at Warwick on his next start, however, impressing with how quickly he settled matters after surging to the front soon after the second-last.

He scored by two and a quarter lengths but would have won by further had he not been eased close home, and he had plenty in hand. He still looks well treated after an 8 lb rise in the weights and can give another good account.
