Cork Saturday: Keep Believing in this Likeable Handicapper3 min read
Mudlark Keep Believing goes well fresh and for an apprentice, so looks the best bet on Cork’s flat card.

The news that Pat Smullen would not be riding for the foreseeable future after the diagnosis of a tumour recently has been a blow to all followers of the flat scene in Ireland, but will be most keenly felt by Dermot Weld, with whom Smullen has built a formidable partnership which stretches back two decades. Weld has been quick to snap up the services of Declan McDonogh this weekend, and the pair can hit the mark quickly with Zamroudpour, who looks the one to beat here after a promising debut effort at Dundalk in December. He showed clear signs of greenness there, and looks certain to improve markedly, while the fitting of blinkers is rarely a negative for Weld runners, unlike many yards who tend to go for the headgear in desperation.

Keep Believing ran a stormer when runner-up in the Mallow Handicap on this card a year ago, coping well with heavy ground, and running his best race to date. He subsequently won his next two races, and kept improving throughout the season, scoring again at Roscommon in September, and looked unlucky back here on his final start. He goes well for an apprentice, and the promising Luke McAteer should have no difficulty getting the best out of Brian Nolan’s mudlark.

A wide draw is certainly no bar to success over the trip when the ground is testing, with the fields tending to shun the inside rail, and that makes Mojambo of interest on his first start for Johnny Murtagh. The daughter of Zoffany showed promise for Ger Lyons as a juvenile despite clearly needing the education on her early starts, and given her attractive pedigree, and progressive profile, she could be very leniently treated off a mark of 59. If she wins, Murtagh will be particularly pleased, as she will be sporting the colours of his wife Orla.
