Ahead of a huge weekend of racing which features the Oaks, Derby and Eclipse, Friday has five Flat cards with Haydock, Chepstow, Hamilton and Navan on turf whilst Wolverhampton hosts an all-weather card. Speaking of the Derby on Saturday, we are still offering four places on the race and rider confirmations and the draw really started to change the market yesterday.
Ante post favourite, English King, has been drawn in stall one. Since 1967, when Stalls were in use for the Derby, only three winners have come from that box. 2000 Guineas winner Kameko has to contend with being drawn 11, another far from ideal number if you are bothered by the stats. Ryan Moore opting for Mogul has seen his price contract and he is another drawn in a position that has performed poorly when looking at the stats.
With the weekend action looking so good it is just the one suggestion from me today. This closing handicap perhaps doesn’t get the blood pumping like the Derby but offers a good chance to find a winner at a nice price. My eye is caught by the bottom weight from Tony Caroll’s yard of Temur Khan. The horse was fourth last time out at Newmarket and has been dropped a pound for that run, he drops in class today and has the benefit to Tom Marquand booked to ride. The trainer has been ticking over OK since the resumption of racing and I think Temur Khan can put a big run in at Chepstow here and add to that total so far.
