Mulholland’s promising chaser has a stiff task on paper, but is fancied to give the weight away in the SCL Sales Chase

4:30 SCL Sales Chase

Half the field are due to turn out again having run in the Galway Plate on Wednesday, but none make particular appeal, and the one who really catches the eye is Kalondra from the Neil Mulholland yard. The son of Spadoun is definitely one to follow in his second season over fences, and he’s worth a bet despite meeting a few of these on disadvantageous terms. He gave 5lb and a beating to subsequent Cheltenham Festival winner Coo Star Sivola at that track in December, and looked all over the winner on his return to Prestbury Park in April, only to tie up late on having passed the entire field on the bridle. The impression he left there was that he was some way ahead of his mark, and it’s very interesting that Mulholland is willing to sacrifice that mark to run in this conditions event, and that suggests he’s either lost his marbles (very unlikely), or that he believes Kalondra can make his mark in pattern company this winter. He will need to improve to beat Sun Lieutenant at the weights, but it’s not certain that Henry de Bromhead’s gelding will have recovered from a tough race in the Plate just four days ago.
